We become good writers via osmosis

Of course, we cannot neglect the ever more important influence of just doing the craft—just writing. However, we become writers also because we have read books. Specifically, we develop taste (what makes for pleasurable reading), because we have encountered this in the writings of others.

Unfortunately, there is a good chance that most of the books we’ve read were written by Westerners, who have a certain way of doing writing. Because of this, it is uncomfortable to read works that break writing conventions, particular of the West.
