Writing workshops
Why do they have a certain pull to me? I think because I have an ego and they promise additional status boost. But there is also the opportunity to meet new people. What happens in those meetings could either be good and bad. And, of course, writing workshops offer an opportunity to learn and visit new places. Among these last two, only the latter is an unadulterated pro of these events. Overall, even the most well-meaning ones could reinforce prevailing toxic norms in writing.
Like Dennis Aguinaldo who proposed an alternative way of writing (Forest of Moments per Aguinaldo), I no longer share the main ethos of workshops. Because of this, there is some work to be done. I think in creating and promoting alternative spaces and methods. If I am to continue working within literature as a secondary or complementary field alongside religion, this is part of the work to be done. And it is work that needs a lot of time and effort, comparable to more ego-based writing practices.
