Grief recovery process for pet loss

Create your pet loss history graph.

  1. Set aside somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes.
  2. Get your journal or a piece of paper and draw a line across the page. This is your timeline.
  3. Beginning as far back in childhood as you can remember, plot the approximate year that all your past pets died. Put the name of the pet and the year of their death. Just an estimate will do.
  4. If you want, you can also write a few sentences about your feelings of each loss.

Set aside somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes.
You can put the year or specific date down if you remember it, or the approximate age you were when it happened. Don’t be preoccupied if your memory is not exact about those details. It’s more important to recall your feelings about the loss and what was said or demonstrated to you about it by your parents or others.
Put the year and the name of the pet, and then writing a few sentences about one of the most vivid memories that comes to mind. It is also helpful to add something about the ending of the pet’s life and the feelings you had when he died.
