An hour or so writing sessions which Pinky Aguinaldo started in April 2026.

Below are the writing prompts I prepared for the group.

A. Warm Up

  1. Compose a list poem made up of familiar phrases, or phrases that have stayed in your mind for a long time—from songs, poems, essays, talks, or conversations. (Optional: Attempt to write a new poem beyond the list but still informed by it.)
  2. Take one word. Write a poetic etymology of that word based on your personal history or the history of a person you know. Present your own meaning of the word then trace how this meaning shifted using a particular human life.

B. Mountain Beacon prompts

Original: From Pampanga to Baguio, taps are running dry. Write about thirst—literal, emotional, political, or existential. What do we long for when even water disappears?

  1. Write a poem from the perspective of someone who has lived for no less than 20 years in a place where water is severely scarce. The place could be a drought-stricken rural area, where there is almost no rain and crops are severely limited. Or it could be a crowded city where water is rationed daily and is costly. Describe the setting and the experience without using the words water, thirst, dry, or drink.
  2. Return to your family or your community. Think of a certain thirst or desire that seems to run through each of your family member or those in your community. Write a poem or a scene that shows this desire in action.
